Breast milk is best
Breast milk is the ideal food for babies: it gives them everything they need in their first months and helps protect them against illness. It is superior to any infant formula.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, then continued breastfeeding, together with suitable complementary foods, up to two years of age or beyond.
Preparing for and maintaining breastfeeding
A varied, balanced diet during pregnancy and while breastfeeding supports both mother and baby. Your midwife, doctor or a breastfeeding counsellor can help you get started and keep going.
Giving your baby bottles in addition to breastfeeding can reduce your milk supply, and a decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse.
Using infant formula
Infant formula should only be used on the advice of an independent health professional, such as a doctor, midwife, pharmacist, dietitian or childcare specialist.
Always follow the preparation and storage instructions on the tin exactly: clean and sterilise bottles and teats, use safe water as instructed, measure the powder precisely and never keep prepared formula for later. Incorrect preparation or storage can harm your baby's health.
Before choosing formula, please also consider the social and financial implications, including the cost of feeding with formula over many months.
Follow-on and growing-up formulas
Follow-on formula, such as Nutrimilk Premium 2, is only suitable for babies from six months of age as part of a varied diet. It is not a breast-milk substitute during the first six months.
Growing-up milk, such as Nutrimilk Premium 3, is meant for young children from one year of age, as part of a varied diet.
Special formulas
Special formulas are foods for special medical purposes, for babies with particular nutritional needs (for example premature birth, reflux, lactose intolerance or cow's milk protein allergy). They must only be used under medical supervision.
